To practice outlining and continue familiarizing students with elements of a plot (like setting and characters), we have been outlining and writing stories in English class. The teaching also grades students on their use of adverbs like first, next and last to communicate sequence of events.
In addition to assisting my assigned student with cerebral palsy, I help any other student in the functional skills classes. Here is an excerpt from a conversation about a student’s story.
Student: My story’s gonna be about these guys stealing guns from a store.
Me: Shouldn’t you write about something a little more positive?
Student: Yeah…I know! They can steal glasses from a store.
